Our 50th Year Icon

As part of our ongoing celebration of the magazine’s fiftieth year in print, this month’s Dog-Eared Page is a short story previously published in The Sun.

Shortly after I started working at The Sun, a friend asked me what kind of work we publish. He and I both love speculative fiction, from traditional sci-fi and fantasy to anything that departs from reality as we know it. I told my friend The Sun doesn’t typically print genre work and tends to favor literary writing. My friend reminded me emphatically that separating writing into “genre” and “literary” presents a false dichotomy. I don’t really know why I’d suggested otherwise. My personal canon has always been rich with genre fiction and traditional classics alike.
